Jenson Button Wins Canadian Grand Prix 2011

Jenson Button hailed his astonishing drive from last to first through the rain of Montreal as the best victory of his Grand Prix career.

He survived an early high-speed clash with team-mate Lewis Hamilton to knock World Championship leader Sebastian Vettel off the top step of the podium on the very last lap

Delirious at the remarkable nature of his rain interrupted Canadian Grand Prix victory, Button said: ‘I really don’t know what to say, it’s been a very emotional three hours — or whatever it’s been since the start. I kept on pushing and I managed to get past Seb at the end. Another great win for me, the best of my career.’

A chaotic race — suspended for two hours because of the torrential downpour — saw 2009 world champion Button, 31, forced to come from last place to pip Vettel on a day where there was yet more misery and criticism for Hamilton.

Fresh from controversy at the Monaco Grand Prix a fortnight earlier, Hamilton’s afternoon came to an abrupt end when on lap eight an ambitious move up the inside of Button saw his rear left tyre explode after he was squeezed into the pit wall. It prompted Button to scream into inside of Button saw his rear left tyre explode after he was squeezed into the pit wall.

It prompted Button to scream into his radio: ‘What is he doing!’ although he later he revealed he had apologised to Hamilton for the crash blaming a complete lack of visibility in his mirrors due to the wet conditions.

That said former McLaren driver and three-time world champion Niki Lauda was scathing in his criticism of Hamilton.

‘What Hamilton did there goes beyond all boundaries,’ Lauda said during his commentary on German TV station RTL. ‘He is completely mad. If the FIA does not punish him, I do not understand the world any more. ‘At some point there has to be an end to all the jokes. You cannot drive like this — as it will result in someone getting killed.’

The incident was investigated by the stewards after the race.

Hamilton, unlike in Monaco, maintained his composure when speaking about collisions with first Mark Webber and then Button and insisted it the incidents were part and part of racing, especially in the wet.

He said: ‘It was tricky conditions, I was doing the best I could to keep the car on track. I think I had pretty good pace, and whilst I fell behind Jenson, he made a mistake out of the last corner and I got the run on him.

‘I think he outbraked himself going into the last chicane, and he got a pretty poor exit. I felt I was halfway up the outside of him, but he kept moving across. Whether or not he saw me I don’t know.

‘There was no room for me, no run off and I was in the wall. It was kind of lucky it didn’t take both of us out. I don’t think it was intentional, I know Jenson quite well. He would not do that. I thought I was alongside him, but it doesn’t matter now.’
